My Two Bike-Camping Bicycles
I talk about the upgrades to my Gunnar Rocktour Adventure and the way I pack it for bikepacking and bike touring trips. I also show the set up that I use with my Swift Industries bags on my Raleigh Tamland 2. On that bicycle I also use the Jack the Rack bike rack now.
The panniers on the Gunnar the the Junior Rangers and the big bags on both are the Zeitgeist.

A Pleasant Surprise | North Coast Inland Trail
Переглядів 6 тис.14 годин тому
Erin and I decided to drive to Elyria to ride a rail trail we had never been on before - The North Coast Inland Trail. We stopped in Kipton, Oberlin, and had lunch in Wakeman before turning around and riding back. We did 40 miles on our bicycles and were pleasantly surprised with the scenery on this mostly shaded bike path. Plain Dealer Article/photos/video: tinyurl.com/48nx5ms7 #cycling #railt...

A long day out on the road but riding my gravel bike. My friend Brad was in town so I went to visit him by riding down the Towpath and then up out of the Cuyahoga Valley on Valley Parkway. After I headed to my parents' in Bath for dinner. Finally it was down Sand Run Parkway and then back up out of the Valley home. I love a day on the bicycle like this. #cycling #bicycles Swag: www.fitzwatercyc...

We spent the weekend cycling in the Ann Arbor, MI area and it was awesome. We started with the fast, flowy trails in the Waterloo Recreation Area - The DTE Energy Foundation Trail - 25 miles of fun. The next morning we went to the Ann Arbor Handmade Bike Show riding a 30 mile gravel road loop before the show. We cruised around the city and the University of Michigan that evening. Riding the Storm Out | Group Bike-Camping!

The annual Joy Machines Memorial Day Weekend bike camping trip was heading out to West Branch State Park this year. We met the Cleveland area gang out in Kent. After lunch at BellTower Brewing we rode down the Portage Hike & Bike Trail then out into the country. Even with the threat of severe weather we managed to get a swim in and somehow dodge the worst of it. We returned to Kent the next day...

I had to fly out to Nebraska for work but before I left Erin and I hit the Industrial Gravel cuts in Akron and Kent on our gravel bicycles. This spring has been summer-like and pretty amazing. I'm excited to get back and on some planned bike-packing and gravel adventures. #cycling #gravelbike Swag: www.fitzwatercycles.com/store-2 My Bags Swift Industries Affiliate link: alnk.to/biqzedP My Bike ...

It feels like we went from late Winter/early Spring right into Summer weather. It has been perfect for riding around on the gravel bikes and I have no complaints. This is a compilation of bicycle rides from the last couple weeks as everything turned green. Akron is pretty again. #cycling #gravelbikes Swag: www.fitzwatercycles.com/store-2 My Bags Swift Industries Affiliate link: alnk.to/biqzedP ...

Getting the Shot? Bikes & Cameras.
Lots of good practical stuff in this video. I've noted that the serious bike campers who go the distance seem to jettison the drop bars in favor of a sweep bar like Tim's or maybe a Jones bar.
I have to say your opening comments made me challenge my own thoughts and opinions on ebikes. After watching this video, and after some thought, I concluded my biases against them were off base and unwarranted. Truly. As a bicycle commuter and pleasure rider, I agree, the more biking.....whatever the type, is a good thing and brings more demand for infrastructure. Also, ebikes open more types of folks to get out there. This video and your few words showed me I was wrong in my negative attitudes towards them. Thanks for the video. Andrew
I have riden this trail from Maumee, Ohio to Bellevue ( I picked up the trail at its western terminus) There are some road sections through Fremont. There is a wonderful Tudor Inn in Bellevue that is very friendly to bicycle touring folk. It is also literally on the trail. It is a wonderful trip for me as this was my "first overnighter". West of Bellevue it is mostly farmland and some green tunnel. However I love WIDE open spaces more than the Cuyahoga valley! 😂 (I love both actually). Riding through Toledo is tough as it is so industrial. Swing south and pick up the Wabash Cannonball trail to go west. Wish I could PM you as I ride daily in the Toledo/Maumee area. Enjoy your trip to Ann Arbor. Andrew
Don’t tell the people in my mountain bike park that trails have directions!
😬
O man, no fibbing, Tim! You got the Gunner and the Raleigh and the e-bike! Don't be ashamed to be a cheater, lol. And I grin and ha, I agree, I am happy with my cobbled-together bikes these days. And I am having too much fun with my 26" Diamondback MTB with a Green Zone Bikes e-bike conversion kit as an ultimate townie/commuter bike. Keep up the great work, Tim, I really do enjoy your cycling vibe and one of these days I need to return to Ohio to do a big ride you lead, maybe the Akron-Canton Tour or something. 😀
Bike, set up. Top👌
Why is your drive train on the left side of the bike😳🤣
I don't know why the DJI is reversing the image - I need to look into whether I can stop that or not.
Huge alt bar fan with inner bar ends for other hand positions.
what's a Gunner Ride?
More off road and rough stuff.
I just looked up Burke Airport... holy shit there's NO REASON why they should have that airport blocking all of the lakefront. Should be a massive park put in there instead.
There’s room for a park and development if they wanted. It’s such a shame.
I got a Grizl with suspension for rougher terrain and mountain bike gravel and a Bombtrack Audax with 650b and 47mm tires for road and flat smooth gravel. I love both bikes and they fulfill my needs.
Hello Everybody =) Here’s my contribution thoughts of how many bikes to have and since it’s not snowing in Phuket, I felt 2 bikes is good enough. A single speed for doing short rides and grocery shopping and a multi speed with semi off road tires for touring. I just felt since I don’t have much time spend on my bicycle and when I do, I want to ride the favorite bike =) As for those swipe back handlebars…. it gave me the “2 in 1” features and I love the reverse position, something in between the drop n straight level.
Juh-Noah, I grew up about 12 miles from there in Oregon, Ohio. Guess how that’s pronounced haha. Gotta love the Midwest…
Good morning Tim. For some reason I can't find the link to your swag store. Can you explain to me where it is? Neil.
Its in the description: Swag: www.fitzwatercycles.com/store-2
Oh, thanks Tim.. You are up late. 😀
How wide is the bar on your Raleigh? Thinking of a Zeitgeist but not sure if my bars are wide enough.
These are 50s but I ran narrower bars with these bags before. The side pockets can be cinched down.
@@TimFitzwater Thank you so much! I appreciate it. I have 42s and I think they might be too narrow. Love your content!
Handlebar changes coming huge!
I have the same Carradice bag support and use it for the Zeitgeist. Works really well.
Did you do a video on the midnight special you had for a while?
My sister and I are going to ride the Katy Trail in 2026. We are credit card touring; we are celebrating her 60th and my 65th birthdays! I need to check out bags.
Nice! That one is on my list. Credit card touring is fun - just carrying tools and clothes - I haven't done it for a while now.
Considering all your miles and experience(s), this lack of fussing & I'll just work-with-what-I-got-and-its-more-than-fine approach to a bike pack setup has been today's teaching moment I didn't know I needed!
Ha! Awesome. I guess since I started with really hack, less than ideal set ups what I have now all seems really nice and fancy!
I like the pink. It’s festive
My advice is use this ten spot for IPA's! But that's up to you! 😆
Thanks so much! I will buy Erin and I a good one on the trip and let her know where it came from!!
Love the trails at Lake Minnewaska! I made the drive up there a couple times a year to ride when I lived in CT. The road riding around there is pretty spectacular too.
Its so cool. We did do road ride too - down from Kingston over The Gunk and into Poughkeepsie.
Which brooks saddle is your favourite Tim? I've just started using a Giles Berthoud and its great
B17 on most my bikes. Haven’t tried the Berthound’s yet but they look rad.
Giro Pink nice touch
Next thing ya know I’ll be buying anodized Chris King headsets. 😬
@@TimFitzwater bound to happen
Excellent ride Tim! As someone who has done more than his fair share of centuries, you remind me that there's more than one way to skin a cat. In other words, I would have done it a little differently. The gravel bike is a fine choice, since top speed isn't really necessary, but top comfort is. To that end I would use slick tires for lower rolling resistance. I know you like Rene Herse tires, so the 44 mm Snoqualmie Pass tires are excellent and should fit your Raleigh. I've had a pair before, and I'm currently riding the 48 mm Hatcher Pass tires on my gravel bike, and enjoying them. Both can handle all the gravel you want to throw at them, so long as it's mostly dry. Clearly you realized your mistake with that heavy lunch. It looked awesome, and made me want to check out that restaurant next time I'm in Cleveland. But, while I think a little protein is good on a century ride, keeping it on the light side, like maybe a small turkey sandwich, is a safer bet. Peanut Snickers is also a good choice for a little protein. I understand the temptation to drink beer on any summer bike ride, but I would save it for party pace rides. It takes extra H20 to process the alcohol, so it really becomes counter productive. Better off drinking something sugary, or straight water if you have many miles to go. Thanks for sharing, and keep the great content flowing!
When it comes to bikes N+1 😃
I mean, that’s how I actually live.
Have a great time at the finger lakes! Cayuga was my favorite of the lakes.
Thanks! It’ll be interesting by bike. Only ever hiked there.
“A friend’s property” to camp on is always nice. Good setup. & if something breaks you have your infinity tool bracelets to lash ‘em back on 😊 I’m a fan. I wear the black, always.
I really love those things. First time I had one on my wrist a friend ripped his rear DR off and I used to to tie it out of the way after I set him up single speed. Cheers!
What canister are you using in your third bottle cage?
That’s a tool keg from Dirty River Bicycle Works. I have my spare tube, levers, and quick link tool in there.
Thanks Tim ...have you ever...........kidding ! Edmund looks good ! Enjoy yourself !
lol! Thanks. I just rode to the park with Edmund in a trailer! Vid soon. 🐈⬛
I love the ideas for mounting Carradice bags you’ve shared. I’ve wanted to get a couple of those Swift bags, and the paint stick mod seems to solve one of my concerns.
They are great. I love that they work in front or back. The plastic insert does give them some rigidity- but the stick makes it even better.
Excellent video! Seeing the different ways to setup a bike for touring is brilliant. There’s no “ cookie-cutter” method especially for bikes that are not “cookie-cutter” either. 😎
Exactly! Cheers!
I know what you mean about getting down to just a bike or two. I have a full rigid mtb and an aluminum/carbon cx bike... but ever since I bought my Waterford touring bike, it does everything so excellently that unless im putting the mtb in the truck to hit mtb trails, everyday is a Waterford day. The cx bike is up for sale, lol
Nice! It’s too bad there won’t be any new Waterfords or Gunnar’s. 🥲
I wanna bring my new mini drone on my next bikepack trip should I bring it or leave it at home ? Don't want it to get wrecked, I'm a solo rider so never seen anyone use one I know u go with alot of people.
I don’t bring my drone because of the other people. If I were you I’d bring it. Isn’t this what you bought it for!?
Nice bikes. It’s nice to have everything in working order . Have some fun rides . 🚲 ❤🚲❤️🚲
Thanks! 😊
Great clip Tim - super informative. I also like that little hook hack. =]
Great tires, just put a set on one of my tandems. I like the ATB or all road bike. One bike for almost everything. I also like to ride from the house to the trail. The adventure starts sooner that way.
100%
Speaking of you mostly only needing two bikes: that Marin you have/had with the tri-spoke wheels - how practical are those wheels? Are they too heavy? Are they durable enough for off-road or bike packing? I always thought they looked really cool.
To be honest I don't know how practical they are now. I rode the entire C&O and GAP Trails on them on a loaded bike. They are originally MTB wheels. They are lightish - but not as light as modern carbon as they did over-build them a bit since they were for off-road and it was early days of off-road carbon. People told me not to tour on them - Pudgy who gave them to me said they were designed to hold up....
Hi Tim- New subscriber here. I've been lurking on your videos for a while now and I have to say that I'm liking what I'm seeing. I'm also glad you've had a chance to visit the Northwoods. You're right- it's beautiful in these parts. Now, having just returned home from another trip up there, the mosquitos are next level from all the rain we've had, so use caution if you plan to visit anytime soon.
We heard so much about the skeeters but didn't have too much trouble. We did bring a device that is supposed to keep them away. Maybe it was just late enough in the season? There hadn't been a frost or freeze yet though so maybe we were just lucky. I definitely want to get back! Thanks for checking out the vids!
why am i seeing left-side drive trains? flashbacks I guess. great content
The camera is reversing the scenes for some reason - it’s weird.
Threw me for a moment too😂
Tim, so glad you got a chance to ride N.C.I.T.,! And liked it! It is where I and my friends ride most often.. You definitely need to check out the rest of it.. Going north to the lake is awesome, then ride into downtown Lorain, ride south on Broadway to about 13th or 14th street to Broadway Mary's. for lunch and coffee---you will love the vibe there! Going west beyond Wakeman is very cool 😎 too. There is camping in Collins at Camp Conley and in Lindsay at Wooded Acres- $5.00 for bikes. Indeed a great trail!
I'm definitely thinking of integrating the whole thing into a longer trip. I want to see the north for sure. A few people mentioned Camp Conley. Thanks!
Tim this is a great trail to ride. It goes through Fremont and takes you through the town. We have done this numerous times.
I have a twenty year old Soma steel MTB bike with a rigid steel fork and top notch components. I typically use it for riding around town, but I have used it as a gravel bike, too. When I used it for the latter, I mounted semi-knobby tires in place of the fat slick tires I normally have on the bike. (I also own conventional knobby X-country MTB just in case.) Also noteworthy is that I have this bike set up with a single chainring up front so that it is effectively a nine speed (9 spd cassette). My questions are: will a semi-knobby tire work OK on this trail, and will a nine speed tranny be sufficient? The front chain ring is a middle one (from a three ring setup). I use this setup as a compromise of sorts. I can climb relatively well, but not too steep. And I can cruise at around 16 to 18mph comfortably. If I want to go faster, my pedaling RPM becomes excessive. So, would this bike work OK on this path? Also, did you get any flats (snakebites, particularly)?
If it is dry it won't matter if the tire are knobby or slick - I would just want to be on the widest you have. With gravel roads its the gravel that slips on the gravel - tread won't matter much. As far as the climbs - there are some gradients in the double digits - so it won't be about how many gears you have but what the easiest one is. I had a 1 to 1 ratio(34x34) and an even easier gear may have been nice but I didn't have to walk anything. Probably just semantics but just to be clear - this isn't a path at all but open roads - so a "route" to be specific. We didn't get any flats on this ride. Flats can happen anywhere obviously but I didn't find it to be high risk.
@@TimFitzwater Thanks much.
Is the Towpath still closed north of Brecksville?
During the week it is.
The group rides I was on already with my steel road bike with 650b wheels and 47 mm slicks where people where like your going to be slow yada yada yada. And then I could easily hold up with all the plastic bikes 😂
Fat slicks are fast AF. ITs funny because there are roadie memes going around right now about "try and keep up on the gravel bike on the club ride". One- I'm not interested in pace line club rides but if I was my bike would not be my limiting factor. Cheers!
I love it. I go from Lakewood to Sheffield Lake, go south to the black river trail, into Elyria, the hop on.
I was in sheffield lake last week.riding up lake road to the lorain pier, and black river trail too
Go get a few heavy panniers on those bikes, then aim for 100 miles a day - then you can start crowing!
Definitely on point! There’s a bike for everyone and what they ride is their choice.
Come to the Catskills, Mr. Fitzwater. It was still fun riding today!
I have friends who just rode that way from Albany to Montreal. It’s on the list!!
